Breakfast and the garden are the two fixed points of a stay at Villa Kristal, and they belong to different halves of the day. The morning happens in a small dining room where the continental buffet is laid out and nobody hurries anybody along. The afternoon and evening belong to the landscaped garden and the sun terrace, which are open to guests from the moment they come downstairs until well after dark.
Between the two sits the city, and the villa is arranged so that leaving for it and coming back from it are both easy. Most guests eat late, walk out around ten, and return in the middle of the afternoon to sit under the trees rather than push through one more museum.
Morning at the buffet
Breakfast is served as a continental buffet in a cozy dining room rather than a banquet hall, and the difference is immediately obvious. There are bread and pastry, cold cuts and cheese, fruit, and coffee that keeps coming, laid out on a table that the kitchen watches closely enough to notice when something runs low. The room seats a villa's worth of guests, not a coach party.
Dietary requirements can often be accommodated when they are requested in advance. Guests who need gluten-free bread, avoid dairy or eat no pork tend to write a line with their reservation, and the kitchen plans around it rather than improvising on the morning. It is a small kitchen, so notice genuinely helps.

Afternoon in the landscaped garden

Nobody needs to book a table or ask permission. Guests come and go through the day, read, work, let children run about for an hour, and treat the space much as they would a garden at home.
Evening on the sun terrace
The terrace adjoins the garden and takes the last of the sun, which makes the hour before dusk the busiest and most pleasant part of the day out there. Tea-making facilities in the lobby are a few steps away, so a pot carried outside costs nothing and requires no arrangement with anyone.
After dark the terrace stays open and stays quiet. It is the sort of place where people compare the day's walking, plan tomorrow's route over the river, and go up to bed later than they intended.
